Best Sunscreens to Buy with an FSA and HSA Card

beach, summer, beach ball

Summer is just about here, and as you pack the car with your beach essentials, don’t forget the sunscreen! Properly covering your skin with clothing and SPF is still one of the best ways to protect your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

But, aren’t you tired of spending tons of money on lotion and sprays just to use the whole bottle with the family at the beach? How about spending over $50 on your favorite facial moisturizer that contains SPF? Well, if you have an FSA or an HSA card, you’re in luck since spending your dollars on sunscreen with an SPF of 15 and above is an FSA / HSA eligible expense. Here are my favorite FSA / HSA eligible sunscreens that you can buy on Amazon!

FSA and HSA Eligible Sunscreen for your Face

CeraVe Tinted Sunscreen with SPF 30, Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen With Zinc Oxide & Titanium Dioxide, Sheer Tint

You can’t make a top sunscreen list without including one of the best brands in skin care, CeraVe. Developed by dermatologists, and at a great price point, CeraVe sunscreen is one of the best and most efficient ways to use your FSA / HSA dollars. And customers LOVE that their favorite brand created a tinted mineral sunscreen to help avoid that “white cast”

One of the most recommended sunscreens online, the EltaMD SPF 40, is an FSA & HSA eligible expense! Best for those who have sensitive skin, the EltaMD SPF 40 is an unscented, light sunscreen that doubles as a great moisturizer. Dermatologist recommended, and with over 10K reviews, you can be assured that you’re making a wise choice with your FSA card. At this high price point, you’ll be getting your best bang for your buck buying Elta MD FSA eligible Sunscreen.

This sunscreen DOES have octinoxate in it, so if that bothers you i’d recommend subbing for a mineral sunscreen.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios AOX Daily Antioxidant Serum with Sunscreen, SPF 50 Daily Sunscreen, Vitamin C & E, Oil-Free

Another great sun care brand, La Roche-Posay, that is surprisingly FSA / HSA eligible. Recommended by thousands of dermatologists, La Roche-Posay has been a pioneer in UV protection research for over 15 years. This daily antioxidant serum is great for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It’s free from parabens and fragrances.

Customers say that it is very lightweight and great to wear under their liquid foundation. At such a high price point, if you’re a regular user of this product and you’re not using tax-advantaged FSA / HSA dollars to purchase, you’re missing out on massive savings! I will add that this product is NOT reef safe, as its a chemical sunscreen that contains oxybenzone.

If you’re worried about harmful chemicals and hurting the reefs, then Thinksport is the brand for you! Free of harmful chemicals, this non-nano Zinc Oxide based sunscreen will give you safe, natural protection from harmful UVA & UVB rays. Great for your face, and suitable for the whole family! Very reasonably price point, and made even better when you use your FSA / HSA card for this item!

FSA and HSA Eligible Sunscreen for your Body

A brand leader in sun care, Supergoop! has a spray that is oxybenzone and octinoxate free! They don’t use propellants to power their spray, rather its a bag-in-valve, allowing you to also get every last drop of sunscreen thats in the bottle! No sunscreen wasted, and hopefully no FSA dollars either.

One of my go-to purchases for sunscreen with my FSA card is supergoop! You can find Supergoop! usually at any Ulta or Sephora near you. You can check out all of Supergoop!’s FSA and HSA eligible products on Amazon here!

One of the most popular sunscreens on Amazon, and from one of the most trusted brands out there, comes a sunscreen that everyone probably has tried when stopping at a drug store on their way to the beach. A strong SPF 70 from Neutrogena will provide added protection for those with fairer skin, tattoos, etc. This is a chemical sunscreen that contains oxybenzone, so you will not be able to use this in areas that restrict this sunscreen.

One of the top rated sunscreens on Amazon, this sunscreen spray sits at a great price point for the amount of sunscreen you get, in the easy-to-use spray applicator. Reef-Safe, and recommended by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), you can be sure that you’re using a sunscreen that isn’t harmful to your body and the environment. This is a chemical sunscreen, so if that bothers your skin then please check out their mineral spray or other mineral based sunscreens.

“From Farm to Face”, Coola is an awesome skin care brand whose ingredients and price points will make any sunscreen consumer pleasantly delighted! You can usually find them in a Sephora or an Ulta.

They’re cruelty free, parabens free, gluten free, vegan, and powered by organic ingredients! They use non-nano zinc to help protect you from those UV rays, and being able to use your FSA / HSA card will help with the wallet too!

FSA and HSA Eligible SPF Lip Balms

It is very important to protect your lips from sun burn, and taking the effort to use your FSA / HSA card to buy an SPF lip balm will greatly reduce your chances of getting skin cancer on one of the most vulnerable parts of your face. According to Healthline, the bottom lip is 12 times more likely to get skin cancer than the top lip.

The #1 sunscreen lip balm on Amazon for a reason, cheap, comes in a ton of different variations, and is FSA / HSA eligible. Protects you from harmful rays, and protects your wallet. Buy the 3-pack for maximum savings. Free of parabens and reef safe, with tons of great reviews on Amazon.

One of the top reviewed lip balms on Amazon, from a brand that most people would recognize and trust. This sunscreen contains both chemical and mineral ingredients, and customers have suggested that the product does leave a white cast on their lips. If you’re not opposed to chemical sunscreen on your lips, then this could be a great option for you to try!

Another popular luxury sunscreen brand that you’d likely find at an Ulta or a Sephora, Coola’s mineral lip balms are premium and they are FSA and HSA eligible.

However, because they are mineral, many customers mention that the lip balm is tough to apply, and it applies on like a paste instead of a balm. Mineral would mean that your lips are fully protected, but may have a little bit of a cast on them.

Applies like a lip stick, protects your lips from UV rays, and available in three stylish colors. Save $10 when you buy the three-pack, and even more savings when you use your FSA / HSA card.

Where can I use my FSA and HSA card to buy Sunscreen?

In my opinion, the best place to use your FSA and HSA card to buy sunscreen would be amazon.com. Why? It is because they are the largest retailer that accepts your card online, and will have the largest selection of sunscreen available. Be sure to shop safely on Amazon, especially when it comes to shopping OTC topicals and ingestible products (shop directly from the brand or Amazon.com, not from third-parties). Why isn’t my favorite sunscreen FSA and HSA Eligible?

There are a number of reasons why your favorite sunscreen isn’t FSA / HSA eligible. The first is that your sunscreen needs to be used primarily to block broad spectrum UV rays in order to be considered FSA / HSA eligible. Meaning, suntanning lotion, cosmetics, or sunscreen lower than SPF15 will not be eligible. The FDA recommends you to use an SPF of 15 or higher when you are exposed to the sun.

The 2nd reason is that your favorite sunscreen may have not been approved for FSA / HSA eligibility yet. Your retailer or the brand would need to submit this product for FSA / HSA eligibility consideration. Until then, you can ask your benefits administrator if the sunscreen is eligible for reimbursement, and be sure to hold onto your receipts!

Feel free to comment in your favorite sunscreen brand if you’re looking for answers or have any questions! If you are a brand looking to become FSA eligible, please contact me here!
